Detty December 2026: When to Book Flights to Lagos and Accra Before Prices Peak
Every year the same thing happens. In August, flights to Lagos for Christmas look expensive but manageable. By late October the cheap seats have gone. By the first week of December, a return ticket from London or Houston can cost more than the whole rest of the trip. Detty December, the weeks of weddings, concerts, family reunions and beach parties that pull the diaspora home, is the busiest travel season of the year for Nigeria and Ghana, and airlines price it that way.
You can't make December cheap. You can stop it from being ridiculous. The travelers who pay the least tend to do three things: they book early, they avoid the handful of dates everyone else wants, and they stay open to routes and airports that aren't their first choice. This guide walks through each one, for trips to Lagos, Abuja and Accra in December 2026 and early January 2027.
Set fare alerts now. Try to book long-haul December tickets by mid-October at the latest. Fly out before about December 12 and come back after about January 6 if your job or school allows it, because the days around Christmas and the first weekend of January are usually the most expensive. And compare at least one route with a stop against the nonstop flight before you pay.
Why December Fares Climb So Fast
Airlines sell seats on each flight in price bands. The cheapest band sells first, then the next one opens, and so on. On most routes, if a flight isn't filling up, airlines release sale fares closer to departure. December flights to West Africa rarely have that problem. Demand from the UK, the US, Canada and Europe is huge, school holidays line up, and there are only a limited number of nonstop flights. So the cheap bands go early and don't come back.
That's why the usual advice to "wait for a sale" works badly in December. On peak dates, fares tend to rise steadily as departure gets closer. Waiting for a price drop in November usually means paying more, not less.
Demand also flows in both directions. Many Nigerians living at home fly to Accra, Dubai or London for the holidays at the same time as the diaspora flies in. Some routes, like Lagos to Accra, get busy in both directions for most of December.
When to Book
For ordinary international trips, booking two to five months ahead usually gets good prices. For December travel to Nigeria or Ghana, aim for the early end of that window.
August to September: start watching. Set price alerts on Google Flights or Skyscanner for your route and a few date combinations. Note what "normal" looks like so you can recognize a good fare when you see one.
September to mid-October: book long-haul flights. This is usually the best window for flights from the UK, US, Canada and Europe. If you see a fare you can live with on dates that work, take it. Waiting for a few pounds or dollars off rarely pays in peak season.
By October: book regional hops. Lagos to Accra and domestic flights inside Nigeria also get expensive in December. If you plan to split your trip between cities, book those short flights early too.
November onward: expect to pay more. You can still find seats, especially on routes with a stop or on less popular dates, but prices on the nonstop flights for Christmas week are often at their highest.
The Dates That Cost the Most (and the Least)
Exact patterns change a little each year, but the same pressure points come up again and again.
Shifting your trip by even three or four days can make a real difference. If you have some flexibility, try every combination of outbound dates in the first half of December with return dates in the second week of January before settling on anything.
Nonstop and One-Stop Routes Worth Comparing
Nonstop flights are the most convenient and usually the first to sell out. Routes with one stop take longer but often cost less, and they add seats when the nonstops are full.
From the UK
British Airways and Virgin Atlantic fly nonstop from London Heathrow to Lagos, and British Airways also flies to Abuja. Air Peace flies nonstop from London Gatwick to Lagos. For Accra, British Airways flies nonstop from Heathrow. With one stop, compare Turkish Airlines through Istanbul, Royal Air Maroc through Casablanca, EgyptAir through Cairo, Ethiopian Airlines through Addis Ababa, and Emirates or Qatar Airways through Dubai or Doha.
From the United States
Delta flies nonstop from Atlanta to Lagos, and United flies nonstop from Washington Dulles to Lagos. For Accra, Delta flies from New York JFK and United from Washington Dulles. If those are full or too expensive, look at one-stop options through London, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Istanbul, Addis Ababa, Casablanca or Doha. Check transit rules for the passport you're traveling on, especially if you connect in Europe.
From Canada
There are no nonstop flights from Canada to Nigeria or Ghana, so every route has at least one stop. Popular options go through London, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Istanbul, Addis Ababa or a US hub. If you hold a Nigerian passport only, avoid connecting through the United States, because you'd need a US visa just to change planes.
Between Lagos and Accra
The flight takes about an hour. Air Peace and Africa World Airlines fly the route, along with other West African airlines, some of which stop in Lomé. Fares can more than double in December, so book early if you plan a Lagos and Accra holiday.
A cheap one-stop ticket is no bargain if you can't board it. What to Expect to Pay
These are rough return economy fares that travelers commonly see. They move with oil prices, exchange rates and demand, so treat them as a guide to the gap between normal months and December, not as quotes.

Ways to Pay Less
Move your dates away from the crowd
Flying out a week earlier or coming back a week later is usually the single biggest saving. If you can't change the trip length, even swapping which days you travel within the same fortnight helps.
Try another airport
Compare Abuja with Lagos, and check whether flying into one city and out of another works for your family visits. Some travelers fly into Accra, spend a few days there, then take a short flight to Lagos, which can be cheaper than a December nonstop to Lagos.
Compare one-stop routes
Istanbul, Casablanca, Addis Ababa, Cairo, Doha and Dubai connections add a few hours but can cost hundreds less per person. For a family of four, that adds up quickly. Leave a comfortable connection time, and check what happens if a delay makes you miss the second flight.
Book the whole family at once, then check single tickets
Airlines price every ticket in a booking at the level of the most expensive seat needed. If only two seats are left in a cheaper band, a search for four people may show the higher price for everyone. Try searching for one or two passengers to see whether splitting the booking is cheaper.
Book directly and pay by card
Once you've found the best fare on a comparison site, book it with the airline or a well-known agency. Changes and cancellations are easier, and paying by card gives you more protection if something goes wrong.
Every December, travelers lose money to fake agents offering cheap "December tickets" on social media or WhatsApp. Never pay into a personal bank account for a flight. After any booking, check your reservation on the airline's own website using the booking reference, and make sure you have a 13-digit e-ticket number. If an agent can't give you one, you don't have a ticket.
Baggage: Read the Rules Before You Promise to Bring Gifts
Many people fly home in December with suitcases full of presents, so baggage becomes a real cost. Allowances vary by airline, fare type and route. Some economy fares include two checked bags on West African routes, while cheaper fares may include only one or none. Around the holidays, some airlines also publish baggage embargoes or limits on extra bags for certain routes.
Before you book, compare the total price including the bags you'll need. Weigh your luggage at home, pack heavy items in your carry-on only if they fit the weight limit, and pay for extra bags online in advance, which is usually cheaper than paying at the airport.
Documents: Don't Let Paperwork Ruin the Trip
If you're Nigerian with a foreign passport only. You need either a valid Nigerian passport or a Nigerian visa to enter. Nigeria replaced visa on arrival with an online eVisa in 2025, and there is a category for foreign passport holders who are Nigerian by birth. Apply only through the official Nigeria Immigration Service portal at evisa.immigration.gov.ng, and apply well before December.
Ghana. Nigerians and other ECOWAS citizens can enter Ghana without a visa. Travelers on other passports should check Ghana's current visa rules for their nationality before booking.
Yellow fever card. Ghana asks for proof of yellow fever vaccination at entry, and many travelers are also asked for it in Nigeria. Carry your card in your hand luggage, not your suitcase.
Passport validity. Make sure every passport in the family is valid for at least six months beyond your return date. Renewals take longer in the busy months before Christmas.

Don't panic-buy the first expensive nonstop you see. Search a full week either side of your dates, try routes with one stop through Istanbul, Casablanca, Addis Ababa or the Gulf, and compare Abuja and Accra with Lagos.
